Follow this self-guided historic walking trail, which takes visitors on a journey through time, exploring the island's diverse past. Starting from Tai Jin House, the trail meanders through the Settlement area, passing by key historical sites. Informational plaques along the route provide some insights into the island's history, including its discovery, the phosphate mining, and its strategic military significance during the world wars. This self-guided trail not only offers a fascinating glimpse into Christmas Island's past but also allows visitors to understand its enthralling stories at their own pace, uncovering the many layers of this incredible destination. THREE TO FIVE HOURS SELF DRIVE TRAIL
Once, a bustling railway connected Drumsite to the vibrant community at South Point, tracing the journey of phosphate mining that shaped Christmas Island's economy and society. This trail retraces the old railway's path, celebrating the efforts of those who forged through dense forests and rugged terrains to access valuable phosphate reserves, establishing a thriving town in their wake. Alongside the tales of these pioneers are the stories of their families, who supported this challenging endeavor. The trail is part of a series that includes "A Step Back in Time," highlighting the island's historic settlements, and "The Spirit of Christmas Island," exploring its rich cultural heritage. These narratives weave together to offer a comprehensive view of the island's past. Visitors can start their exploration with a map from the Visitor Centre and perhaps a picnic to enjoy at Flying Fish Cove. The full circuit, requiring three to five hours, includes some off-road driving, making an all-wheel drive or 4WD vehicle advisable. Please note certain sections may be closed during the red crab migration.

A short walk from Territory Day Park leads to Tai Jin House, and venturing beyond it reveals historical defenses including a naval gun and buildings erected during World War II to safeguard Christmas Island. Nestled on the rugged shores of Christmas Island, the South Point Settlement Remains whisper tales of a bygone era, where the echoes of a bustling community and the clatter of phosphate mining once filled the air. Heritage-listed and cloaked in the aura of history since 22 June 2004, this site is a mosaic of the past, featuring the Chinese South Point Temple, along with two quaint temples, standing as guardians over the ruins. The skeletal remains of the railway station, with its adjacent water tank, and the fragmented structures dot the landscape, offering a poignant glimpse into the island's vibrant history from 1914 to 1974. As the mining era waned and the settlement was dismantled to mine below, only a few landmarks were spared, leaving behind a landscape imbued with memories and the potential of undiscovered archaeological riches.
